Sept. 19, 2016 -- China has postponed the upcoming visit of the EU parliament delegation to voice strong dissatisfaction after the EU parliament met with Dalai Lama.

Dalai Lama has recently visited France and no official meetings were arranged by the French government due to concerns about China’s reactions. However, the EU Parliament met Dalai Lama at its headquarters in Strasbourg on Sept. 15, 2016.

"The EU Parliament has always played the so-called role of ‘human rights defender’. However, what they did may not influence EU decisions but will do harm to the EU-China relations," said Sun Keqin, a researcher from the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.

"China and the EU have conducted extensive cooperation on various fronts including economy, culture and sports. Because of different social systems and ideologies, we have deep divergences on human rights. Though some differences have been eased through dialogues between governments over these years, some may exist for a long time," added Sun.
