Tibet's first palace Yumbu Lhakhang
May 30, 2016 -- China's new prefecture-level city, Shannan in Tibet, was inaugurated on May 27 with its new city committee of the Communist Party of China, government, the people's congress standing committee, and the city's political advisory body established.
Shannan, as the birthplace of the ancient Tibetan civilization and culture, boasts Tibet's first King, palace, farmland, temple, religious script and Tibetan opera.
In 2015, Shannan's GDP reached 11.362 billion yuan with the disposable income of urban residents reaching 23,881 yuan and that of herdsmen and farmers reaching 8,991 yuan.
In January this year, the State Council approved the application of Shannan to become the fifth prefecture-level city in the region after Lhasa, Qamdo, Xigaze and Nyingchi.
The establishment of Shannan City will boost local economy and improve people's livelihoods, said Zhang Yongze, party chief of the new city.
